First Grade Students learn about the Fantasy Art of Paul Klee

When Paul Klee was a small child, his grandmother read amazing fairytales to him and this inspired him to imagine fantasy lands and images of his own.  He once said that he worked all of his life to draw like a child.
1st Grade students will learn about the art of Paul Klee (pronounced "Clay").  They will see that one must use his/her imagination to interpret abstract art.
For our project, we will create the Head of the Man (pictured above) using stencils.  Students will learn to make their own stencils and use them to decorate their  "Head of the Man or Woman."  We will stencil using oil pastels and finish the project by adding paint in a wash technique.

Paul Klee would be proud!!

GRADE 1 ARTISTS MAKE PEACE POSTERS

Pablo Picasso made many Peace Posters during his career.  Grade 1 students viewed many of his works in a PowerPoint presentation.  They then began work on their own Peace Poster using the pictured work by Picasso as a guide.
They began by drawing their hands and adding flower stems that were overlapped by the hands.  We used acrylic paint to make the flowers and glued them to the artwork to make a collage.
Finally, the students made thumbprints with red paint around the edge of the frame and turned the thumbprints into ladybugs.

THE FIRST PROJECT

Lines, Texture, Shape

The students will be introduced to texture and how it is represented in art. They will begin the project by making texture rubbings of several different surfaces. The next step will be to cut and glue shapes; next they will add lines and they will finish by gluing a frame.

This lesson is to introduce students to three of the Elements of Design.
